Are Rubies Good for an Engagement Ring?

Maybe the traditional diamond isn’t your style?  You want a little color on your finger.  Rubies are an excellent option when it comes to engagement rings.  Not only are they known for their beautiful and bold red coloring, but they also have the durability to withstand your daily adventures.

Rubies have been one of the most important gemstones throughout all of history.  Their bright red color led many cultures to believe rubies held the power of life.  They are mentioned in the Bible four separate times.  Many of the Medieval Europeans wore rubies to guarantee health, wealth, wisdom, and success in love.  In 2015, a 25.59ct ruby ring sold at auction for $32.4 million, making it one of the most expensive gemstones in the world.  Conclusion: Rubies are awesome, but why are rubies good for an engagement ring?  Here’s why:

1. Rubies are one of the hardest gemstones used in jewelry

When it comes to engagement rings, durability is key.  No other piece of jewelry gets as much wear and tear as your engagement ring.  In most cases, you never take that ring off your finger.  That means the stones must be able to withstand chores, work, exercise, playing with your kids, etc.  Ruby is the next hardest gemstone after a diamond.  Though it’s not invincible (and a diamond would still withstand quite a bit more abuse), as far as colored gemstones go, ruby is one of the best options for your engagement ring.

2. There is a ruby for almost any budget

Not every ruby is going to cost $32.4 million dollars (though I would happily sell you one 😊).  In fact, you can find some options for less than $500.  Since the quality of ruby can vary significantly, there is an option for every budget.  Other factors such as treatments and origin can make beautiful stones more affordable.  If you want that perfect red and inclusion free ruby without the shocking price tag, you can opt for a lab grown ruby and easily stay within budget.

3. Color!!

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but rubies are the friend you wish you could be… Adding a huge pop of color to your engagement ring will really make it stand apart from the thousands of rings other women are wearing. What color is more show-stopping than red? Need I say more?

Now that you are convinced, where can you find the perfect ruby engagement ring?  Since they are not nearly as common as diamond engagement rings, your options may be more limited.  Instead of spending hours looking in stores and online, why not have it custom made?  A custom engagement ring, in my slightly biased opinion, is a great way to get a stunning ruby and the perfect setting.  Give Virginia Ann Designs a try.  You can schedule a free consultation and talk allllll about your ruby ring dreams.
