How to Make an Engagement Ring Unique

There are a lot of options when it comes to buying the perfect engagement ring.  Why is it that out of thousands of different designs, many of them are SO BORING!?  If you are someone that wants to mix things up a little and propose with a one-of-a-kind ring, then there are a few things you can do to answer the question, of how to make an engagement ring unique.

Mix up the shape

The most common stone shape for an engagement ring is a round brilliant cut.  There is some science behind this, but the gist comes down to the fact that RBC cut diamonds/gemstones have the best light reflection.  This does not mean that other cuts have poor light reflection, just that the round is slightly better.  What other cuts may lack in perfect reflective proportions they absolutely make up for in personality.  Marquise, emerald, radiant, pear, heart, Asscher, and oval are just a few of the more common gem cuts.  You can get even more unique by using a portrait cut, rose cut, moval, shield, fantasy, etc.  For those of you that want truly one-of-a-kind, you can even get a diamond or gemstone custom cut into an entirely new shape.

Add some COLOR

Diamonds are incredibly popular for engagement rings and for good reason.  You can smack your diamond ring against the side of your car and your car will suffer more than your diamond.  They are incredibly durable.  They are not, however, very colorful….  An easy way to make an engagement ring more unique is to use a colored diamond (yes, they exist and are BEAUTIFUL) or a gemstone.  Colored diamonds are natural or lab grown diamonds that have been treated with pressure and/or temperature to become a certain color.  You can find these beauties in blue, green, red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and black.  The best part?  The colors are permanent.  They don’t scratch off or fade over time.

What about gemstones?  Sapphires are an excellent option if diamonds aren’t your thing, but you still want some durability.  Though they aren’t as resistant to wear and tear, they are the hardest option out of all the natural gemstones.  They also come in just about any color you can imagine.  Some sapphires even come in multiple different colors or can change color depending on the type of light they are reflecting.  Many of the unique colors and cuts are one-of-a-kind, making this an excellent option if you want a ring no other woman will be wearing.

Engrave, Engrave, Engrave

Maybe you or your partner really like the traditional or classic styles many businesses sell.  That’s great!  You’ll have a much easier time finding exactly what you want.  There is a way, however, to make your ring unique without changing the classic look you love.  Engraving!  The inside of many rings can be engraved with whatever you would like (depending on the style).  Dates, initials, bible verses, and terms of endearment are just a few options, but you can get even more creative with phrases like, “put it back on!” or “shut up and kiss me” (I have actually engraved these on the inside of rings).  In some cases, simple pictures or fingerprints can also be engraved on the inside of the band.  You know the engraving is there and you can show it to whomever you’d like, but the classic style of your ring isn’t compromised.

Custom design your dream ring.

If you want to go for a truly one-of-a-kind ring, custom is the best path for you.  A custom engagement ring can be just about anything you can imagine (assuming it falls within the realm of reasonable construction).  Say you fell in love hiking the mountains in Colorado.  A custom jeweler can incorporate those mountains into your design.  Or maybe your grandmother gave you the diamond from her engagement ring and you want to remake her ring design, but more in your modern style.  Perhaps you simply can’t find anything you like after scouring the internet and local jewelry stores.  A custom ring is going to be the best solution!  Whenever I create a custom engagement ring for my clients, I start with their ideas and inspiration and I build a ring they have never seen before, but it’s exactly what they have been looking for.
